Goal planning can sometimes get a reputation for being all business and no play. But the truth is, adding creativity to your goal-setting process can open the door to bigger dreams and desires than you could have imagined. Setting aside time for reflection in your goal-planning process is vital in ensuring that you are consistent while also enjoying the journey of getting closer to success. By creating little micro habits for yourself, you can remain focused on achieving your goals while still having a bit of fun along the way.
Success is a definition that means something different to everyone.
It can be easy to get lost in someone else’s definition of success. We may feel compelled to chase after goals that aren’t ours, and it can be difficult to stay motivated when what we’re working towards doesn’t really have meaning. But there are ways to stay on track, even if you don’t know what “success” looks like for you. Making sure you check in with how your goals feel will keep you from depletion and work from a place of aligned action. Here is how you can achieve your own definition of success.
Create Your Own Words for the Year
Having a few words or phrases that remind you of your goals and hopes for the year will help keep you focused and motivated. These words should reflect your own personal values and passions. Writing them down somewhere where you will see them every day—such as in a journal, on your phone wallpaper, or on a post-it by your desk—will give you something to refer back to whenever you feel lost or unmotivated. There is also a chance to check in with your goals in the new moon journal prompts. This will help remind you why you are pursuing success in the first place!
The five areas in your life to assess:
- Lifestyle
- Wellness
- Creativity & Development
- Relationships & Community
- Spirituality
Write ten emotions or feelings and energies that would describe what you want in this area of life. Narrow it down to one emotion or feeling and make a toolkit that you refer back to bring more of this energy or feeling into your life.
Start with Micro Habits
Sticking with new habits can be hard when we have grand visions of our future selves but don’t really know how to get there. To help, start small with micro habits—tiny actions that take only a few minutes each day but still lead towards achieving long-term goals. For example, if your goal is to read more books this year, start reading one page per day instead of tackling an entire book immediately. Or if you want to take up running but don't know where to begin, start by taking 5-minute walks around the block each day before gradually increasing the duration and intensity over time.
Replace Bad Habits with Good Ones
If mindless scrolling is a bad habit that keeps getting in the way of reaching your goals, replace it with something more productive such as stepping outside for some fresh air or going for a short walk instead. Every time you find yourself picking up your phone out of habit, try taking a few moments outside instead—this simple switch could help put some positive momentum behind achieving your definition of success!
Everyone has a unique definition of success that fits their values and passions. However, staying motivated throughout the year can be challenging without specific steps in place to keep us on track. Creating words for the year that reflect our personal vision helps us stay focused. Starting small with micro habits allows us to gradually build up towards achieving our goals without putting too much pressure on ourselves at once. Finally, replacing bad habits with good ones will ensure that nothing gets in the way as we work towards our version of success!
