If you're an empath or a highly sensitive person, you may find that being around other people can be draining and exhausting. This is because we are all energy and emit a certain frequency or vibration. Our energy can be affected by and attached to other people, even without physical contact with them. It is up to us to protect our energy but sometimes, when we are caught up the in the emotions and energy around us; it’s hard to assess how to fix it. In this blog post, I'll share ways that will help you protect your energy when you're around other people.
Ways to protect your energy:
- Meditation
- Mantra
- Try to be non-reactive
- Remove yourself from the negative environment.
- Process your feelings
- Create a sacred space
Meditation
Check out the short meditation above or use the prompts below to make your own.
Sit or stand with your spine straight and close your eyes. Take a deep breath in through your nose and exhale through your mouth. On the inhale, imagine yourself surrounded by an orb of white light. On the exhale, imagine the white light expanding and enveloping you. Repeat this for a few minutes until you feel calm and centered.
Now, imagine yourself in a busy or crowded place. Visualize the people around you and how their energy might be affecting you. As you breathe, imagine the white light expanding and protecting you from negative energy. Surround yourself with the light until you feel calm and safe.
You can use this meditation anytime you feel overwhelmed or drained by other people's energy. By surrounding yourself with white light, you create a space of protection and peace.
Mantra
Make a mantra that you can repeat to yourself whenever you are headed to a space where your energy may be compromised. Save it in your phone, so you have quick access to it.
I am protected from negative energy. I have an orb protecting my mind, body, and soul. I don’t engage with the negative energy and release judgment from anyone who is holding on to it. My orb cannot be penetrated.
Try to be non-reactive
The truth is that we will always be triggered, but it is up to us how we react and process the situation. It may take you excusing yourself to process your emotions in a safe space. It may take you from communicating that you need time and will get to the person when you are in a better head space.
Remove yourself from the environment
Removing yourself from the negative environment is important so you can process the situation. Just remember to communicate your needs to do so that the person isn’t triggered by your actions. People who may not understand how their energy affects others may not have self-awareness and may trigger something within them. Take some deep breaths, get grounded, and clear the energy before returning to them.
Process your emotions
Find practices to process your emotions. Things like meditation, journaling, and walking in nature will support you while you process the situation.
Create a sacred space
Find a place in your home or work where you can take a few moments to allow yourself to process your emotions. It doesn’t have to be fancy or big, but it should feel safe to you. Mine started with a pillow next to my side of the bed on the floor. It was a very tiny space, but I knew I could go there when I needed some time to myself. Over the years, it has grown into a multiple-purpose room that includes my office, my altar, and a tv room for my kids.
With these suggestions, you can create a space of protection around yourself to safeguard your mental and emotional reserves. This will allow you to pace yourself and stay motivated over time. Remember, you are not responsible for absorbing other people's energy—you have a right to protect yourself from it!
